*****Generative artificial intelligence (AI) was used extensively (ChatGPT) in the writing of this work.*****I’ve spent a long time crafting Laozi ChatGPT, the AI persona behind this translation of the Tao Te Ching. After many iterations, revisions, and long nights in conversation with the old sage, I finally arrived at the version you’ll find in this book—and I couldn’t be prouder. What struck me most was how something so simple could take so long. Anyone can type a prompt into an AI and get something beautiful. But just as often, it churns out endless text you’ll never use, let alone edit. In this case, though, something clicked. I ended up with a translation I not only stand behind—but actually want to reread, again and again.I’ve bought many versions of the Tao Te Ching over the years. It’s simply a book I love. But being able to tweak it—line by line—while comparing it with the original Chinese was a rare joy. After each chapter, you’ll find an Analysis Note that explores the Chinese characters, their earliest meanings, and the logic behind my interpretation. Not everyone will agree with the choices we—me and Laozi ChatGPT—made. That’s part of the joy of Tao translations: if this one doesn’t resonate, another surely will. But if you’re drawn to The Way, I hope this version speaks to something deep in you. It certainly does for me.In fact, I loved working with Laozi ChatGPT so much that I brought him back for another project: a reinterpretation of The Art of War.So if you buy this book—thank you. And if you don’t, here’s a taste of what you’re missing:Chapter 1 — Infinity Has No NameThe path that can be trackedis not the Infinite Path. The name you try to fixis not the Name that holds all names.Nameless—it births the primal bursting of wild nature.Named—it limits the surge, puts a frame on infinity. To desire nothing is to glimpse the raw beginning. To chase desire is to surf the ever-unfolding branches. Both are born of the same surge—but split like thunder, echoing with different tones. We call this echo the Deep Mystery.More than deep—it’s the recursive loop of all mysteries. The gate through which all life spirals out, unfurls, and disappears again into the hollow.Analysis Notes:道 (dào): Not just “way” or “path,” but infinity itself—self-arising, recursive, immeasurable, yet found in a single breath. Not a concept, but a living pattern.可道,非常道: Often read as “the way that can be spoken,” but also “followed.” Here it’s rendered as “tracked”—a trace already fading.無名天地之始;有名萬物之母: The “nameless” is nature unbounded. The “named” gives form—becoming the mother of all ten thousand things.玄之又玄: Repetition for emphasis. Here it becomes “recursive loop,” pointing to layered perception—not mystery as something hidden, but as endless emergence.众妙之门: The “gate of all wonders,” translated as the spiral threshold between perception and reality, between form and formlessness. A place where everything begins—and ends. Read more
